gift card generator
Create hundreds of gift cards at once and download the codes as a secure, encrypted file.
Shopify creates gift cards one at a time and never shows the full code again — making bulk programmes painful and reseller sales near impossible.
what it does
Gift Card Generator creates up to 1,000 real Shopify gift cards in one batch, with your own code prefix, then gives you every code in an AES-256 encrypted file.
Built for corporate sales, reseller programmes and staff rewards. Codes are encrypted, auto-deleted after 7 days, and any batch can be deactivated instantly.
features
- Create up to 1,000 gift cards in one batch, with your own code prefix
- Download every code in an AES-256 encrypted, password-protected file
- Codes encrypted, auto-deleted after 7 days, any batch deactivated instantly
- Works on every Shopify plan — no Shopify Plus required
in more detail
- Real Shopify gift cards. Created through Shopify's own API, visible under Products → Gift cards, redeemed the same way as any other.
- Codes you control the shape of. A prefix of up to five characters, a body length between 11 and 15, and alphanumeric or numbers-only.
- No ambiguous characters. No code contains both O and 0, or both I and 1 — these get read aloud and typed by hand, and that matters.
- Verified before release. Every card is checked against Shopify before a file is produced, so you are never handed a list containing a code that doesn't exist.
- A password shown once. Never stored, so it cannot be retrieved or resent — by us or by anyone else.
- An audit trail. Every batch, export, download and deletion is recorded against the staff member who did it.
- Two scopes, nothing more. The app asks to read and write gift cards. Not customers, orders, products or payments.

faqs
getting started
Do I need Shopify Plus?
No. The app works on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Bulk gift card tooling is often Plus-only, but this isn't.
Are these real Shopify gift cards?
Yes. Every card is created in your store through Shopify's own API and behaves exactly like a gift card you'd create by hand. They appear under Products → Gift cards in your admin, and they're redeemed the same way.
How many cards can I create at once?
Up to 15 per batch on the free plan, and up to 1,000 per batch on the paid plan. There's no limit on how many batches you create.
How long does a batch take?
Shopify's API creates cards one at a time, so a large batch takes a few minutes — roughly six minutes for 1,000 cards. It runs in the background, so you can close the page and come back; progress is shown on the batch.
Can I choose what the codes look like?
Yes. Add a prefix of up to five characters, choose a body length between 11 and 15 characters, and pick alphanumeric or numbers-only. Ambiguous characters are excluded automatically, so no code contains both O and 0, or both I and 1 — they get read aloud and typed by hand, and that matters.
codes and files
Why can't I see the full codes in my Shopify admin?
Shopify only ever shows the last four characters of a gift card code, whoever created it. That's the reason this app exists: the export file is how you get the complete codes.
How do I get the codes?
Once a batch completes, click Export. The app shows you a one-time password, then lets you download an AES-256 encrypted ZIP containing a CSV of every code, with its value, currency, expiry and batch reference.
What if I lose the password?
Re-export the batch. That produces a new file with a new password. The password is never stored, so it can't be sent to you again — which is deliberate, since a password we could retrieve is a password an attacker could retrieve.
How many times can I download a file?
Three times per batch, counted across all exports. Re-exporting doesn't reset the count.
Why do codes disappear after 7 days?
Gift card codes are cash. The longer they sit on someone else's system, the longer they're exposed. After seven days the app deletes the codes and the export file, and keeps only the batch record — what you created, when, and each card's last four characters.
Your download is the copy of record. Store it somewhere you'd store anything else valuable.
Can I get the codes back after 7 days?
No. They're permanently unrecoverable from the app.
The gift cards themselves are unaffected — they remain live in your store and will still be redeemed. It's only the list of codes that's gone.
Can I delete the codes sooner?
Yes. Once you've downloaded the file, a batch shows a "Delete codes now" option. It removes the codes and the stored file immediately rather than waiting for the seven days to elapse. Some merchants prefer this — the shorter the window, the smaller the exposure.
Does deleting the codes cancel the gift cards?
No, and this is worth being clear about. Deleting codes removes our copy of the list. The cards stay live and spendable. If you need the cards themselves stopped, use Deactivate batch.
Can I set an expiry date?
Yes, though most merchants don't. Gift card expiry is restricted or prohibited in a number of jurisdictions and the rules differ sharply by region, so it's your responsibility to confirm an expiry date is lawful everywhere you sell.
What currency are the cards in?
You choose, from the currencies enabled on your store. One currency per batch.
if something goes wrong
A file has gone to the wrong person. What do I do?
Use Deactivate batch. It stops every card in that batch in one action, so the codes can't be redeemed. Do it first and investigate afterwards — deactivation is the thing that limits the damage.
What if a batch fails partway through?
The app verifies every card against Shopify before it releases an export file. If any card can't be confirmed, the batch is marked as a partial failure and no file is produced — so you'll never be handed a list containing a code that doesn't exist.
Where can these cards be redeemed?
They're standard Shopify gift cards, so they work wherever your store accepts gift cards — in store and online. Codes aren't case-sensitive, so it doesn't matter whether a customer types upper or lower case.
plans and billing
What does the free plan include?
Everything, limited to 15 cards per batch. Full code export included. No time limit and no trial to expire.
What does the paid plan cost?
$19.99/month, which raises the limit to 1,000 cards per batch. Billed through Shopify, so it appears on your normal Shopify invoice.
What happens if I cancel?
You return to the free plan rather than losing access. Batches you created while subscribed stay fully available for their normal seven-day window — you can still download and re-export them. Deactivation always works, whatever plan you're on.
What's a passcode?
Some merchants are given full access at no charge through a commercial arrangement with Software Etc. If you've been given a passcode, enter it on the New batch screen. If you haven't, you don't need one.
security and data
Where is my data held?
On servers in Amsterdam, in the EU.
Is the app able to read my gift card codes?
Codes are encrypted while stored. They're decrypted only to build your export file, and every decryption is recorded in an audit log. Nobody at Software Etc. reads codes in the ordinary course of running the service.
What do you keep permanently?
The batch record — dates, quantities, values, each card's last four characters — and a one-way fingerprint of every code the app has generated. The fingerprint can't be turned back into a code; it exists so the app can guarantee it never issues the same code twice.
Does the app access my customers' data?
No. The app requests permission to read and write gift cards only. It doesn't request access to customers, orders, products or payment information, and gift cards are created with no recipient attached, so no card is linked to a customer.
What happens when I uninstall?
Stored codes and export files for your store are deleted immediately.
Who can create batches in my store?
Anyone with access to your Shopify admin and permission to use apps. Every batch is recorded against the staff member who created it, so issuance is always attributable.
